Lent Day 11 [3.17.2025] / The Light of the World Pt. 1

Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16 / 마태복음 5:13-16

John 8:12 - Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Overview:

The second description Jesus uses to portray our role as believers in this world and the present age is light. In John 8:12, Jesus declares Himself to be the light of the world. If we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. When we think about a light, we often think about the sun, a traffic signal, headlights, or even the light in our room. We know these lights have the important purpose of allowing us to see where we are going, guiding us in our walking, and even providing essential vitamins for our body to function and energy and nutrients for creation to thrive. Jesus Christ declares that He is the true light of the world: He is the light that guides us, nourishes us, gives us sight and insight, establishes hope and eternal life in us. All light that we see in our physical world points to, glorifies, and teaches us that Jesus Christ is the true source of all life.

The Terror of Darkness:

In our modern world, we rarely experience complete darkness. Even at night, the moon provides a certain level of light to our world, let alone the little lights that are on in our rooms or homes. However, to be awake in complete darkness is one of the most terrifying experiences we can ever endure. When God established His covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15, God put Abraham into a deep sleep and brought a dreadful darkness over him. Interestingly so, the bible tells us that when the sun had set and darkness had fallen, that is when a firepot with a blazing torch appeared as a promise that God would relinquish the darkness and bring salvation through the line of Abraham. In Exodus 10, God brought complete darkness for three days over the Egyptians who had enslaved His people. During these three days, no one could see anyone else or dare to even move about. This means that the darkness was so terrible and complete that no one could even light a candle or reach for a lamp. The darkness rendered them paralyzed and filled with terror. In Judges 7, 2 Chronicles 20, and Joshua 10, God caused the enemies of Israel to turn against themselves and their allies by bringing darkness and confusion over their camps. According to Jesus’ description, hell is a place of utter darkness and a fiery furnace where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Jesus is the True Light:

Reading in the dark, a malfunctioning traffic signal, looking for a lost earing without a flashlight, are all very difficult, dangerous, if not impossible tasks to complete. Without light we would lose our senses and our world would be thrown into chaos, confusion, destruction, and death. Yet, these are simply small signals and representations of what our lives would become without Jesus Christ. When God establishes His covenant with Abraham, the terrible darkness that overcame him was relinquished as the sun was setting, not rising. When God brought complete darkness over the Egyptians, the days and nights were still recorded, and when God defeated the enemies of Israel, He caused them to lose their senses and turn on each other regardless of the presence of the sun and moon. Jesus states that you can be seeing but never perceiving, hearing but never understanding (Mark 4:12). Without Jesus, we would live our lives asleep and without purpose, enslaved by fear, turning on and tearing one another apart. Our blindness in life, our fears and anxieties, our worries and negative thinking have nothing to do with a gloomy day, but everything to do with the absence of true light in our hearts and minds. The sun could rise, and you can have the brightest lights in your room, and the strongest flashlight on the market, but without Jesus Christ, you will never find your way. He is the truth that sets us free from the bondage of darkness and has overcome the terror, chaos, and death it causes.

Devotion:

We often forget how blind we truly are without Jesus simply because we can see with our eyes. However, the quality of your life has little to do with the ability to see, and more to do with your perspective. If we stood on either side of a number 9 that were drawn on the ground, I would describe it as a 6, while you would describe it as a 9. While preferences and opinions are important to growth and maturity, we are talking about the difference between truth and falsehood. When we do not have Jesus in our lives, we stand on the opposite side of Him and view the world, our lives, and relationships us from a false perspective. This perspective causes anxiety, confusion, frustration, and fear in our lives. Instead, when we stand on the side of Jesus, we can see the world, our lives, and relationships in truth. This perspective builds in us perseverance, character, and hope. In turn, not only would having Jesus in our lives light our way but would allow us to serve as a light for others. Today, we hope to take the first step towards living an incredible and powerful life by accepting Jesus Christ into our lives. The light that He is, brings us vision, passion, and hope for each day and empowers us to bring that light to others still in darkness.

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for sending your one and only Son, Jesus Christ into this world to be the light in our darkness.

2. Jesus, help me to receive you and live in your clarity and perspective in all circumstances.

3. Holy Spirit, help me to live every day as the hope and light of Jesus Christ.

예수님께서는 이 세상과 현재 시대에서 우리가 믿는 자로서 해야 할 역할을 빛이라고 묘사하십니다. 요한복음 8장 12절에서 예수님은 자신이 세상의 빛이라고 선언하셨으며, 우리가 그분을 따르면 어둠 속을 걷지 않고 생명의 빛을 얻게 된다고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 빛을 생각할 때 태양, 신호등, 자동차 헤드라이트 또는 방 안의 전등을 떠올리곤 합니다. 이러한 빛들은 우리가 가야 할 길을 보게 하고, 우리의 걸음을 인도하며, 심지어 신체 기능을 위한 필수 비타민과 창조 세계가 번성하는 데 필요한 에너지를 제공합니다. 예수 그리스도는 자신이 참된 빛이며, 우리를 인도하고, 양육하며, 시력과 통찰력을 주시고, 희망과 영원한 생명을 확립해 주시는 분이라고 선언하셨습니다. 우리가 물리적인 세상에서 보는 모든 빛은 예수 그리스도를 찬양하며, 그분이 참 생명의 근원이심을 가르쳐 줍니다.

어둠의 공포:

현대 사회에서 우리는 완전한 어둠을 경험할 일이 거의 없습니다. 밤에도 달빛이 어느 정도 세상을 밝히고, 방 안에서도 작은 불빛이 있습니다. 하지만 완전한 어둠 속에서 깨어 있는 것은 우리가 경험할 수 있는 가장 두려운 순간 중 하나입니다. 창세기 15장에서 하나님께서 아브라함과 언약을 맺으실 때, 아브라함을 깊은 잠에 빠지게 하시고 무서운 어둠을 그에게 내리셨습니다. 흥미롭게도 성경은 해가 지고 어둠이 깔렸을 때, 불타는 횃불이 나타나 하나님께서 어둠을 거두고 아브라함의 후손을 통해 구원을 이루실 것이라는 약속을 주셨다고 기록하고 있습니다. 출애굽기 10장에서 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성을 억압한 이집트 사람들에게 3일간의 완전한 어둠을 내리셨습니다. 이 3일 동안 아무도 서로를 볼 수도, 움직일 수도 없었습니다. 이는 어둠이 너무나도 짙고 두려워서 어떤 등불도 켤 수 없었음을 의미합니다. 어둠은 그들을 마비시키고 공포에 떨게 했습니다. 사사기 7장, 역대하 20장, 여호수아 10장에서 하나님께서는 이스라엘의 적들 가운데 혼란과 어둠을 보내셔서 그들이 서로를 공격하게 만드셨습니다. 예수님께서는 지옥을 '슬피 울며 이를 가는 곳'이자 '바깥 어두움'이라고 묘사하셨습니다.

예수님은 참된 빛이십니다:

어두운 곳에서 책을 읽거나, 고장 난 신호등을 만나거나, 손전등 없이 잃어버린 귀걸이를 찾는 것은 어렵거나 위험하며, 때로는 불가능할 수도 있습니다. 빛이 없으면 우리의 감각이 무뎌지고 세상은 혼돈과 혼란, 파괴와 죽음으로 가득 차게 될 것입니다. 그러나 이것들은 단지 우리가 예수님 없이 살아갈 때 어떤 일이 벌어지는지를 보여주는 작은 예시일 뿐입니다. 하나님께서 아브라함과 언약을 맺으실 때, 그를 덮은 무서운 어둠은 해가 뜰 때가 아니라 질 때 거두어졌습니다. 하나님께서 이집트에 어둠을 내리셨을 때에도 낮과 밤이 여전히 기록되었습니다. 그리고 하나님께서 이스라엘의 적들을 패배시키실 때, 그들은 태양과 달이 있음에도 불구하고 방향을 잃고 서로 공격했습니다. 예수님은 "보아도 보지 못하고 들어도 깨닫지 못한다"(마가복음 4:12)고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님 없이 살아가는 삶은 마치 잠들어 있는 것과 같으며, 목적 없이 두려움에 사로잡혀 서로를 해치는 상태와 다름없습니다. 우리의 인생에서 느끼는 두려움과 불안, 염려와 부정적인 생각들은 단순히 우울한 날씨 때문이 아니라, 우리 마음속에 참된 빛이 없기 때문입니다. 태양이 떠오르고, 방 안에 불이 환하게 밝혀지고, 가장 강력한 손전등이 있다 해도, 예수 그리스도 없이는 결코 길을 찾을 수 없습니다. 예수님은 우리를 어둠의 속박에서 해방하시고, 그 공포와 혼돈과 죽음을 이기신 분이십니다.

묵상:

우리는 예수님이 없을 때 얼마나 맹목적인 상태인지 쉽게 잊어버립니다. 단지 눈으로 볼 수 있다는 이유로 우리가 밝은 세상에 살고 있다고 착각하는 것입니다. 하지만 인생의 질은 단순한 시력의 문제가 아니라, 관점의 문제입니다. 예를 들어, 바닥에 9라는 숫자가 적혀 있다고 가정했을 때, 어느 쪽에 서 있느냐에 따라 그것을 6으로 볼 수도, 9로 볼 수도 있습니다. 개인적인 선호와 의견은 성장과 성숙에 중요하지만, 여기서 우리가 말하는 것은 진리와 거짓의 차이입니다. 예수님 없이 사는 삶은 진리의 반대편에 서서 세상과 우리 삶을 왜곡된 시각으로 바라보게 합니다. 이러한 관점은 불안, 혼란, 좌절, 그리고 두려움을 초래합니다. 반면, 예수님을 우리의 삶의 중심에 모실 때, 우리는 세상을 올바른 시각으로 바라볼 수 있습니다. 이 관점은 우리 안에 인내와 성품을 세우고, 궁극적으로 소망을 심어 줍니다. 나아가 예수님을 받아들이는 것은 단순히 우리의 길을 밝히는 것에 그치지 않고, 우리 자신이 다른 사람들에게 빛이 되는 삶을 살도록 합니다. 오늘, 우리는 예수 그리스도를 영접함으로써 놀랍고 강력한 삶을 살아가는 첫걸음을 내딛고자 합니다. 그분은 우리의 삶에 비전을 주시고, 매일 희망과 열정을 선물하시며, 여전히 어둠 속에서 헤매는 이들에게 빛을 전할 수 있도록 힘을 주십니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 어둠 속에서 빛이 되어 주시기 위해 하나님의 독생자 예수 그리스도를 보내주셔서 감사합니다.

2. 예수님, 제가 모든 상황 속에서 예수님을 받아들이고, 예수님의 명확한 시각과 인도를 따라 살 수 있도록 도와주세요.

3. 성령님, 제가 매일 예수 그리스도의 빛과 소망을 품고 살아가도록 도와주세요.
