Lent Day 13 [3.19.2025] / The Journey of Grace

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20 / 마태복음 5:17-20

John 17:17 - Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

Overview:

When we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are accepting the gift of salvation through total grace. No amount of good works could pay the price of, outweigh, and extract our sinful nature except the ultimate sacrifice that was made for us by Jesus Christ. When we believe in His deity, His perfection, His finished work on the cross, and His resurrection, we must comprehend that God treated His one and only Son as if He committed every sin of every person in all of time despite His perfection; and treats us as if we lived the perfect life of Jesus. The heart of the gospel proclaims that Jesus was a spotless lamb, holy and righteous on the cross who died for our sins so we could be established and rewarded in His righteousness. Not only this, but being buried in the grave, He subjected Himself to death and mortality but in three days resurrected from the grave to not only offer us complete forgiveness by the cross but complete victory in His resurrection. Through Jesus we receive our full redemption back to how God created us to be, without decay or death, living in paradise and perfect fellowship with God. The journey of grace, therefore, has been paved before us by Christ Himself and it is our greatest honor and profession of faith to live according to the truth of the gospel in the present life we have been given.

The Idolatry of Pardon:

So what is this path that Jesus Christ has set before us? Many believers confuse the doctrine of grace with the doctrine of pardon. The doctrine of pardon grants the forgiveness and release of a criminal, wiping the slate clean and restoring the individual’s rights. In some sense, the doctrine of pardon could be applied to our faith in that we have been forgiven for our sins and released from eternal death; however, according to grace we no longer walk in our rights, but upon the righteousness of Jesus Christ. We are called to live in the power of His grace alone, not according to our efforts and plans. Often, the doctrine of pardon leads us to continue in our sin under the pretense of a God who loves us enough to forgive and give us a clean slate repeatedly. Despite knowing that sin is harmless, we compromise because we believe that God will forgive me anyway. While God’s love for us is unconditional and unrelenting, this mistaken conception of grace causes us to confuse regret with repentance. When we sin, we feel guilty and come before God, beating our chest with tears in our eyes. Yet, we continue the cycle of falling into the same sin and then regretting, sinning, and then regretting without any true transformation. The doctrine of pardon prevents us from growing spiritually and is a complete misconception of God’s love and a form of idolatry that permits sin and our selfish desires.

The Doctrine of Grace:

God’s great love for us should not and does not allow us to continue in our sin. The grace that Christ has set before us is not an excuse for us to walk in our disobedience, but defined by the suffering, sacrifice, and humility of Jesus Christ that merits transformation. The doctrine of grace therefore is not based on regret, but on repentance. What is repentance? Repentance is defined as a complete turning away from your path and turning to God. The apostle Paul describes it in Ephesians 2 as being dead to your old self and your old ways and being made alive in Christ. In John 3, Jesus describes the truth of salvation as being ‘born again.’ You are a new creation, given a new life, reborn in the righteousness of Jesus Christ and saved by His grace. Therefore, this doctrine of grace promises that we would be seated with Christ in heavenly realms and be children of inheritance before God our Father in Heaven through the process of extinguishing sin and stripping the cravings in our flesh. Jesus did not come to excuse our sin, but to overcome it in our lives through His grace and sacrifice.

The Work of Grace:

The work of grace therefore is what we refer to as sanctification. Sanctification is the process of becoming more Christ-like in our character, choices, and living. This process is marked by resisting our sinful desires and struggling against our flesh. So how do you know that grace is truly at work in your life? If you are suffering with purpose because you are waging war against your sin in the joy of knowing that Christ has defeated death and through Him you will have victory. We engage in battle against our sin with certainty because we know that Christ did not exempt Himself from the cross, but endured its shame and overcame this world. So stop retreating and wage war against your flesh through prayer, scripture, and discipline. The work of grace is the most noble and decisive path that leads us to follow Jesus unto death and live in the power of His resurrection.

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for sending your one and only Son, Jesus Christ to die for my sins on the cross and overcome the curse of death.

2. Jesus, help me to believe in you and receive the total grace that you have given me by your suffering, the cross, and your resurrection.

3. Holy Spirit, give me the strength to wage war against my sin and desires of the flesh and become more like Jesus every day.  

완전한 은혜 안에 거하기

우리가 예수 그리스도를 주님과 구주로 영접할 때, 우리는 전적인 은혜로 주어진 구원의 선물을 받게 됩니다. 우리의 선한 행위로는 결코 죄의 대가를 치를 수도, 그것을 덮을 수도 없으며, 오직 예수 그리스도의 완전한 희생만이 우리를 죄에서 자유롭게 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 예수님의 신성, 완전함, 십자가에서 이루신 구속의 사역, 그리고 부활을 믿어야 합니다. 하나님께서는 죄 없으신 독생자 예수님을 마치 모든 시대, 모든 사람의 죄를 지은 것처럼 취급하셨으며, 우리를 예수님의 완전한 삶을 산 자로 여겨 주십니다. 복음의 핵심은 예수님께서 흠 없는 어린양으로서 우리 죄를 위해 십자가에서 죽으셨고, 그분의 의로움으로 우리를 세우셨다는 것입니다. 또한, 무덤에 묻히시고 죽음을 경험하셨지만, 사흘 만에 부활하심으로써 십자가를 통한 완전한 용서뿐만 아니라, 부활을 통한 완전한 승리를 선포하셨습니다. 예수님을 통해 우리는 하나님께서 창조하신 본래의 모습—죄와 사망이 없는 하나님과의 완전한 교제 속에서 영원한 삶을 누리는 존재—으로 회복됩니다. 그러므로 은혜의 길은 이미 예수님에 의해 예비되었으며, 우리가 그분이 주신 복음의 진리 안에서 살아가는 것이야말로 신앙의 가장 큰 영광이자 사명입니다.

용서의 우상화

그렇다면 예수님께서 예비하신 이 길은 무엇일까요? 많은 신자들은 은혜의 교리와 용서의 교리를 혼동합니다. 용서의 교리는 죄를 사하여 주고, 죄인을 자유롭게 하며, 그의 권리를 회복하는 것을 의미합니다. 우리 역시 신앙 안에서 죄 용서를 받고 영원한 죽음에서 해방되었습니다. 그러나 은혜의 교리에 따르면 우리는 더 이상 우리 자신의 권리를 주장하며 사는 것이 아니라, 예수 그리스도의 의로움을 의지하며 살아야 합니다. 우리는 자신의 노력과 계획이 아니라, 오직 그분의 은혜의 능력으로 살아가야 합니다. 종종 용서의 교리를 오해하면, 하나님이 사랑이시기 때문에 계속해서 죄를 용서해 주실 것이라는 착각 속에서 타협하며 살아갑니다. 죄의 해악을 알면서도, '어차피 하나님께서 용서해 주실 거야'라는 생각으로 죄를 반복하게 됩니다. 하나님은 무한한 사랑으로 우리를 품으시지만, 은혜를 오해한 이 같은 신앙은 후회와 회개를 혼동하게 만듭니다. 우리는 죄를 지을 때마다 죄책감 속에서 눈물로 회개하지만, 결국 같은 죄를 반복하며 후회하고 또 후회하는 삶을 삽니다. 이러한 왜곡된 용서의 개념은 우리의 영적 성장을 가로막고, 하나님의 사랑을 잘못 이해하는 결과를 낳으며, 결국 우리의 욕망을 우상화하는 결과로 이어집니다.

은혜의 참된 의미

하나님의 위대한 사랑은 결코 우리가 죄 가운데 머무는 것을 허락하지 않습니다. 예수 그리스도께서 우리에게 주신 은혜는 우리의 불순종을 정당화하는 핑계가 아니라, 고난과 희생과 겸손을 통해 변화되는 삶을 의미합니다. 따라서 은혜의 핵심은 단순한 후회가 아니라, 진정한 회개입니다. 회개란 단순한 감정적 후회가 아니라, 삶의 방향을 완전히 돌이켜 하나님께로 나아가는 것을 의미합니다. 사도 바울은 에베소서 2장에서 이를 '옛 자아가 죽고, 그리스도 안에서 새 생명으로 거듭나는 것'이라고 설명합니다. 예수님은 요한복음 3장에서 구원을 '거듭남'이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도의 의로 새롭게 창조된 존재이며, 그분의 은혜로 말미암아 다시 태어난 자들입니다. 그러므로 은혜의 교리는 우리가 하나님의 자녀로서 하늘의 유업을 받는 존재가 되도록 우리를 변화시키는 과정입니다. 예수님께서는 우리의 죄를 단순히 용서하러 오신 것이 아니라, 우리의 삶에서 죄를 이기게 하시려고 오셨습니다.

은혜의 역사

은혜의 역사란 우리가 흔히 '성화'라고 부르는 과정입니다. 성화란 우리가 그리스도를 닮아가는 과정이며, 우리의 성품과 선택과 삶의 방식이 변화되는 것입니다. 이 과정은 우리의 육체적 욕망과 싸우며, 죄의 유혹을 물리치는 것을 포함합니다. 그렇다면 어떻게 하면 은혜가 우리 삶 속에서 역사하고 있음을 확신할 수 있을까요? 그것은 우리가 기쁨 가운데 고난을 감내하며, 죄와의 싸움을 지속할 때입니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 예수님께서 십자가를 피하지 않으셨고, 수치를 견디시며 이 세상을 이기셨다는 사실을 알고 있기 때문입니다. 그러므로 우리는 물러서지 말고, 기도와 말씀과 절제의 삶을 통해 죄와 싸워야 합니다. 은혜의 역사는 가장 고귀하고, 결단력 있는 길입니다. 우리가 예수님을 따라 십자가를 지고 죽기까지 순종하며, 그분의 부활의 능력 안에서 살아갈 때, 참된 은혜의 삶을 경험할 수 있습니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 당신의 독생자 예수 그리스도를 십자가에 내어주시고, 죽음을 이기게 하셔서 저를 구원해 주심에 감사드립니다.

2. 예수님, 제가 당신을 온전히 믿고, 당신의 고난과 십자가, 그리고 부활을 통해 주어진 완전한 은혜를 누릴 수 있도록 도와주소서.

3. 성령님, 저에게 힘을 주셔서 죄와 육체의 욕망을 물리치고, 날마다 예수님을 닮아가는 삶을 살게 하소서.
