Lent Day 17 [3.24.2025] / True Treasure Pt. 4

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24 / 마태복음 6:19-24

Matthew 6:20 - But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Overview:

When we build a life upon Heavenly treasures, it is important to understand the purpose and boundaries of earthly wealth and resources. In Luke 18, a young rich ruler asks Jesus how he could inherit eternal life. Knowing what was in his heart, Jesus responds by stating that he must keep the commandments. In all pride and delusion, the young rich ruler responds to this by saying he has in fact kept all the commandments since he was a little boy. At this point, we understand that the young rich ruler was fishing for compliments and approaching Jesus with a false confidence to think that he had merited a place in heaven based on his wealth and good works; however, Jesus then says that this man still lacked one requirement: to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor. Only then would he have treasure in heaven and inherit eternal life. He only needed to do this one thing to gain eternity, but instead, the bible reveals that this man became very sad, because of his great wealth.

Is being rich a sin?

No, but it is an obstacle rather than a gain in living a holy and humble life. In other words, wealth does not help us understand Jesus, but presents a great difficulty in obeying and accepting Him. When this man asked Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life, Jesus said he must have treasure in heaven. Not only would he have to impoverish himself but choose to live a life of poverty and suffering in following Jesus Christ. The bible says the only reason why he could not obey this command and inherit eternal life was because he was very wealthy and in this moment his wealth became a source of sadness rather than joy. This man was not a criminal, a tax collector, a slave-owner, or a disobedient child. Jesus approaches this man first with the commandments to show the world that this young rich ruler was an impressive and law-abiding man; and yet, he could not receive eternal life and his face was downcast simply because he was very wealthy. This sadness that came over him indicates his great disappointment that the kingdom of God did not belong to people like him, but to the poor and the meek (Matthew 5:3-12). Why? Because to know Christ means to know what humility feels like. To know Christ is to know what it means to be meek and to know Christ means to know how to pick up your cross and follow Him (Luke 9:23-25). This type of life was so unacceptable for the young rich ruler, so obscure and undesirable that he could not even comprehend it all because he was very wealthy.

Worldly Wealth:

What should we do if we are wealthy like this young rich ruler? Our scripture today makes it very clear that we cannot serve both God and money. Money does not only refer to financial abundance, but also represents our greed, our ambitions, our success, our fame, and our power or essentially all the things money can buy, including more money. It is impossible to run after these things and believe that we can simultaneously or even through these things serve God. Not only did God never ask us for our money and success, but He also abhors it as an idol as our scripture says today, we will either love money and hate God or love God and hate money. In living a life for Christ, we must put ourselves in the sandals of the young rich ruler. When Jesus calls us to surrender our hearts to Him, many times we are downcast because we had such rich plans for our lives, we have too many worldly relationships, we are too wealthy in our possessions, too wealthy in our worldly wisdom, and too wealthy in our greed and desires that surrendering to Jesus and wanting to become more like Him becomes undesirable and inconvenient; however, Jesus declares that those who are willing to be poor in all these things will inherit the kingdom of God. Choosing to impoverish ourselves in our desire and obsession of money, possessions, thought, ambition, and fame by surrendering these resources, our lives, our bodies, and our thoughts to God grows our estate and our inheritance in heaven.

True Treasure:

Jesus is not simply referring to monetary wealth, but any worldly accolades that distract and prevent us from truly knowing and following Him. Should we stop pursuing worldly opportunities and pause working on ourselves and our futures? Absolutely not. If God has given you great wealth today, He has also given you the great responsibility to take care of those in need and further the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God belongs to those who are poor in Spirit. This means that someone who is wealthy and poor in spirit would inherit the kingdom of God over another who is poor but prideful in spirit. What does it mean to be poor in spirit? It means to know that without God, we are nothing. God does not command us to be poor financially, but commands us to be good stewards of the resources that He has given us; however, whether we are financially abundant or lacking, in success and failure, in the ups and downs, our greatest concern should never be claiming worldly wealth but serving God and seeking His kingdom first in all circumstances (Matthew 6:33). God does not want to limit your potential for He is the one who created it in the first place. God wants to use your full potential for eternal and glorious purposes, and the truth is He doesn’t need a bag of money to move a mountain; He simply needs our faith and obedience in our present circumstance. Do not chase after the riches of this world, but chase after the spiritual richness of Jesus Christ. True treasure is found by giving up our pride and offering to God our full surrender. What part of my life can I surrender to God today as an offering to serve His purposes rather than my own?

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for blessing me with my present circumstance. I know that you are in control and there is a purpose for what you are taking me through.

2. Jesus Christ, help me to rid myself of worldly wealth and teach me how to be poor in spirit.

3. Holy Spirit, discipline me in all areas of my life to work diligently and faithfully to further your kingdom in my home, school, church, and relationships.

우리가 하늘의 보물을 쌓으며 살아갈 때, 이 땅의 재물과 자원의 목적과 한계를 이해하는 것이 중요합니다. 누가복음 18장에서 한 젊은 부자 관리가 예수님께 영생을 얻는 방법을 묻습니다. 예수님께서는 그의 마음을 아시고 계셨기에 계명을 지키라고 말씀하십니다. 이에 대해 젊은 부자 관리는 어릴 때부터 모든 계명을 지켜왔다고 자부심 가득한 태도로 대답합니다. 그는 예수님께 칭찬을 듣고자 했으며, 자신의 부와 선행으로 천국에 들어갈 자격이 있다고 믿었습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 그에게 한 가지 부족한 것이 있다고 말씀하시며, 자신의 모든 소유를 팔아 가난한 자들에게 나누어 주라고 하십니다. 그래야 하늘에 보화를 쌓고 영생을 얻을 것이라고 하셨지만, 이 말을 들은 젊은 부자 관리는 매우 슬퍼졌습니다. 이는 그가 큰 재물을 가지고 있었기 때문입니다.

부자가 되는 것이 죄인가?

아닙니다. 그러나 부는 거룩하고 겸손한 삶을 사는 데 방해 요소가 될 수 있습니다. 즉, 재물이 우리를 예수님께 더 가까이 가게 하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 그분을 따르고 순종하는 데 큰 어려움을 주기도 합니다. 이 부자 관리가 예수님께 영생을 얻는 방법을 물었을 때, 예수님께서는 하늘의 보물을 쌓아야 한다고 말씀하셨습니다. 단순히 재산을 포기하는 것만이 아니라, 가난과 고난 속에서 예수님을 따르는 삶을 살아야 한다는 의미였습니다. 성경은 그가 이 요구를 따를 수 없었던 이유가 단 하나, 그가 매우 부유했기 때문이라고 말합니다. 이 젊은 부자는 범죄자도, 세리도, 불순종하는 자녀도 아니었습니다. 오히려 율법을 철저히 지킨 사람이었지만, 단지 부유했다는 이유만으로 하나님의 나라를 상속받을 수 없었습니다. 그의 슬픔은 하나님 나라가 자신과 같은 사람에게 속한 것이 아니라, 가난하고 온유한 자들에게 속해 있음을 깨달은 데서 비롯되었습니다(마태복음 5:3-12). 왜일까요? 예수님을 아는 것은 곧 겸손을 아는 것이며, 온유함을 배우는 것입니다. 또한 자기 십자가를 지고 예수님을 따르는 것이 무엇인지 아는 것입니다(누가복음 9:23-25). 그러나 젊은 부자 관리는 이러한 삶을 전혀 받아들일 수 없었으며, 그것이 얼마나 가치 있는 삶인지조차 이해하지 못했습니다.

세상의 재물:

우리가 이 젊은 부자 관리처럼 부유하다면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 성경은 우리가 하나님과 재물을 동시에 섬길 수 없다고 분명히 말합니다. 여기서 재물은 단순한 금전적 부요함을 넘어 우리의 욕심, 야망, 성공, 명예, 권력 등 돈으로 살 수 있는 모든 것을 포함합니다. 우리는 이러한 것들을 좇으면서 동시에 하나님을 섬길 수 없으며, 오히려 이러한 것들은 우리의 우상이 되어 하나님을 멀리하게 만듭니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 돈을 사랑하면 하나님을 미워할 것이고, 하나님을 사랑하면 돈을 미워하게 될 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 우리는 때때로 우리의 삶을 예수님께 온전히 드리기를 주저합니다. 그것은 우리가 이미 세상에서의 삶을 너무 풍성하게 계획했고, 너무 많은 세상 적인 관계를 맺고 있으며, 너무 많은 소유와 세상의 지혜를 가지고 있기 때문입니다. 우리의 욕망과 야망이 너무 커서 예수님을 닮아가는 것이 불편하고 불가능한 희생처럼 느껴집니다. 하지만 예수님께서는 이러한 모든 것에서 가난한 자들이 하나님의 나라를 상속받을 것이라고 선언하셨습니다. 우리의 돈과 소유뿐만 아니라, 우리의 생각과 야망, 명예에 대한 집착에서 가난해지기로 선택할 때, 우리는 하늘의 유산을 얻을 것입니다.

진정한 보물:

예수님께서 말씀하시는 보물은 단순한 금전적 재산이 아니라, 우리가 진정으로 예수님을 알고 따르는 데 방해가 되는 모든 것입니다. 그렇다면 우리는 세상의 기회를 포기하고 자신을 발전시키는 일을 멈춰야 할까요? 절대 아닙니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 많은 재물을 주셨다면, 그것은 단순한 축복이 아니라 그만큼의 책임이 따르는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 이 재물을 통해 어려운 이들을 돕고, 하나님의 나라를 확장하기를 원하십니다. 하나님의 나라는 ‘심령이 가난한 자들’에게 속한 것입니다. 즉, 부유한 사람이더라도 심령이 가난하면 천국을 유업으로 받을 수 있습니다. 반면, 가난한 사람이라도 교만하다면 하나님의 나라를 상속받지 못할 것입니다. ‘심령이 가난하다’는 것은 하나님 없이는 우리가 아무것도 아님을 깨닫는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 재정적으로 가난해지라고 명령하시지 않습니다. 다만, 우리에게 주어진 모든 것을 하나님께서 원하시는 방식으로 선하게 사용하기를 바라십니다. 우리의 인생에서 가장 중요한 것은 세상의 부를 쌓는 것이 아니라, 어떤 상황에서도 하나님을 섬기고 그분의 나라를 먼저 구하는 것입니다(마태복음 6:33). 하나님께서는 우리의 가능성을 제한하고 싶어 하시는 것이 아니라, 오히려 그것을 영원하고 영광스러운 목적으로 사용하기를 원하십니다. 하나님께서는 산을 움직이시기 위해 돈이 필요하지 않으십니다. 그분이 찾는 것은 우리의 믿음과 순종뿐입니다. 세상의 부를 좇지 말고, 예수 그리스도 안에서의 영적 부요함을 추구하십시오. 진정한 보물은 우리의 교만을 내려놓고 하나님께 온전히 순복하는 데 있습니다. 오늘 나는 내 삶의 어떤 부분을 하나님께 드릴 수 있을까요?

기도:

1. 하나님, 현재 나의 상황 속에서 나를 인도하시고 함께하시니 감사합니다. 내가 겪는 모든 일에 하나님의 계획이 있음을 믿습니다.

2. 예수님, 세상의 재물에서 자유로워지고 심령이 가난한 자가 되도록 도와주세요.

3. 성령님, 내 삶의 모든 영역에서 나를 훈련하시고, 가정과 학교, 교회, 그리고 관계 속에서 하나님의 나라를 확장할 수 있도록 인도해 주세요.
