Scripture: Matthew 6:22-23 / 마태복음 6:22-23

Matthew 6:22 - The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

Overview:

In Jesus’ teaching about storing up treasures in Heaven, He provides an important lesson on the predominant sense that determines the state of our heart and minds: our eyes. Jesus describes our eyes as the lamp of our bodies. Just like a lamp reveals the content of a room, our eyes reveal what is in our hearts. How is this the case? Jesus is referring to our perspective and our outlook on our lives. We may be looking at the same situation and circumstance, yet experience vastly different emotions, thoughts, and outcomes based on the difference of our perspective. That is because our perspectives are a result of our unique experiences, environments, expectations, personalities, values and moreover, due to our limitations in time, information, and viewpoint. How many of us have ever experienced a change in perspective when new information comes to light or as time passes by, or when we hear a different viewpoint on a certain situation? While there is room for interpretation, and diversity in experiences and perspectives often allow us to reach the best available truth and justice, Jesus’ teaching refers to the difference between healthy eyes and unhealthy eyes.

The Importance of Perspective:

Jesus strongly affirms that the quality of our perspective not only reveals what is already in our hearts but also determines what we store in it. Have you ever encountered someone who is never happy or satisfied, and always complains about their life? Are you a person who looks at life through a lens of negativity, fear, or hopelessness? In parallel circumstances, two people could walk out on a rainy day and think two very different things. Person A would become stressed and discouraged by the rain while Person B might be happy for the grass and trees. Jesus radically claims that the difference resides in our perspective rather than our circumstances. The problem therefore is not what we see, but how we see things that reveals and determines what is in our hearts.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Eyes:

Often the way we view the world is a result of the experiences we have had in the past. If we have been repeatedly disappointed before, we would have little reason or motivation to be hopeful about our present circumstances. When our past is filled with traumatic events, we might see the world under a shade of fear and distrust. The reality of our world today gives way to the truth that if we do not actively exert control and intention regarding what we allow ourselves to see and in the perspective we choose, we would become subject to its brokenness, deceptions, and destruction. The hope that Jesus gives us resides with the power and responsibility He gives us to open our eyes to certain things and close them to others. In other words, we can choose what we allow ourselves to be exposed to and freely determine what we store in our hearts and minds.

Healthy eyes become a gateway for a healthy mind, heart, and body. Jesus describes a healthy eye as an eye that spiritually functions as it should physically. When light enters the eye through the cornea, the lens located behind the pupil focuses it, the photoreceptors in the retina detects it, electrical signals travel the optic nerve, and the brain processes the signals and interprets them as an image. A healthy eye allows the mind to see the world clearly and allows the entire body to respond adeptly, accurately, and promptly. An unhealthy eye functions spiritually as it would physically. It produces a blurry image, fails to transmit the fully array of colors, and causes strain on the various organs and nerves involved. Thus, an unhealthy eye leads to a delayed, misinterpreted, misinformed, deceived, and misguided response by the rest of the body. Jesus reminds us that much like their function physically, a healthy eye allows us to see ourselves and the world from a viewpoint of ultimate truth while unhealthy eyes blur our vision and cause us to stumble and fall. Such things of truth include hope, joy, peace, perseverance, and love; however, an unhealthy eye gives way to negativity, envy, hatred, chaos, and destruction to be stored in our hearts. In turn, the things we store in our hearts then determine the perspective we have in future circumstances. An individual with darkness in their hearts would find every reason to distrust and complain about even the most perfect moments of their lives. The most important endeavor therefore becomes the ability to see the world, ourselves, and one another through the most clear and bright set of eyes: the ones of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer:

1. God, create in me a new perspective that sees the world and myself through your eyes.

2. Jesus Christ, help my vision and perspective align with your compassion and purposes.

3. Holy Spirit, keep me disciplined about what I allow my eyes to see and therefore what I store in my heart.

우리가 하늘의 보물을 쌓으며 살아갈 때, 이 땅의 재물과 자원의 목적과 한계를 이해하는 것이 중요합니다. 마태복음 6장에서 예수님은 보물을 땅에 쌓지 말고 하늘에 쌓으라고 말씀하십니다. 또한, 우리의 눈이 몸의 등불과 같다고 하시며, 눈이 밝으면 온몸이 밝고, 눈이 나쁘면 온몸이 어둡다고 가르치십니다. 이는 우리의 시각과 관점이 삶의 방향을 결정한다는 의미입니다. 같은 상황에서도 우리가 어떤 관점으로 바라보느냐에 따라 삶의 태도와 결과가 달라집니다.

관점의 중요성: 

예수님께서는 우리의 시각이 단순히 물리적인 것이 아니라, 영적인 상태를 반영한다고 가르치십니다. 우리의 시각과 마음이 건강하다면, 삶을 긍정적으로 바라보고 하나님께서 주신 은혜를 발견할 수 있습니다. 반면, 우리의 눈이 어둡다면 삶을 부정적으로 바라보며 불평과 불만으로 가득 찰 것입니다. 같은 비 오는 날에도 한 사람은 우울해하고, 다른 사람은 자연에 생명을 주는 단비로 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 이는 상황이 아니라, 우리가 그것을 바라보는 관점에서 비롯됩니다.

건강한 눈과 병든 눈: 

우리의 시각은 종종 과거의 경험에 의해 형성됩니다. 반복된 실망과 아픔을 경험했다면, 새로운 상황에서도 쉽게 부정적인 시각을 가지게 됩니다. 반대로, 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 경험한 사람은 어려움 속에서도 소망을 가질 수 있습니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 무엇을 보고 무엇을 마음에 담을 것인지를 선택할 수 있다고 말씀하십니다. 건강한 눈을 가지면 하나님께서 보시는 시각으로 세상을 바라볼 수 있으며, 병든 눈을 가지면 세상의 거짓과 어둠 속에 빠질 위험이 있습니다.

건강한 눈은 우리의 영적 삶을 밝히고, 하나님의 진리를 분별하게 합니다. 이는 육체의 눈처럼 정확하고 선명하게 세상을 보게 하는 역할을 합니다. 반면, 병든 눈은 왜곡된 시각을 만들어 우리를 실족하게 합니다. 하나님의 사랑과 소망, 기쁨과 평안이 가득한 삶을 살기 위해서는 우리의 시각을 점검하고, 하나님께서 원하시는 바른 관점을 가지는 것이 중요합니다.

진정한 시각의 변화: 

예수님의 가르침을 통해 우리는 우리의 관점이 단순한 의견이 아니라, 우리의 삶을 결정짓는 중요한 요소임을 깨닫게 됩니다. 하나님을 신뢰하고, 그분의 말씀을 따라 우리의 시각을 변화시킬 때, 우리는 세상을 밝고 희망차게 바라볼 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 원하시는 가치관과 시각을 가짐으로써 하늘의 보물을 쌓고, 진정한 기쁨과 만족을 누릴 수 있습니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 나의 시각을 변화시켜 주시고, 세상을 주님의 눈으로 바라보게 하소서.

2. 예수님, 내 삶의 관점이 주님의 사랑과 진리 위에 서게 하소서.

3. 성령님, 내가 무엇을 보고 무엇을 마음에 담을 것인지를 분별할 수 있도록 도와주소서.
