Lent Day 19 [3.26.2025] / Covenant Eyes Pt. 2

Scripture: John 9:1-7 / 요한복음 9:1-7

John 9:7 - “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

Overview:

Our scripture today recounts the events of a blind man who encountered Jesus. Walking in the City of David, Jesus sees a man who had been born blind. Immediately, the disciples ask Jesus, “Rabbi, why was this man born blind? Did he or his parents’ sin?” Similarly, when we face times of trouble or unhinged suffering or sorrow, we often desperately seek a reason for such happenings. We revert to the old ways of the law and of justice; that such an affliction must be a revelation of God’s disfavor and punishment for a particular sin in this man’s life. Before Christ, this had been the way of religion, but Christ reveals Himself to be the light of the world, and therefore what was revealed as the punishment of sin made way for the revelation of His grace. This man’s affliction was not only a personal or physical condition. Rather, it was representative of our collective and spiritual blindness due to our sin that made way for our eternal need for Jesus Christ who is the light of the world. Without Christ, we would not see hope, joy, peace, love, or forgiveness; instead, our eyes would be filled with darkness and in turn our bodies would be consumed by it.

How does Jesus give me sight?

Many of us may not suffer from physical blindness, but a spiritual one. We may have the ability to see, but what we consume in our vision, and how we see the world is indicative of spiritual blindness or sight without the light of Jesus Christ. Therefore, Jesus is calling us actively to see according to His eyes and according to His light. This does not mean we need to get glasses or lenses. It means we need to change our perspective through Christ.

Changing our perspective rarely means changing our circumstances or environment. It more requires us to change the way we view and see things. If you find yourself complaining, becoming irritated or exasperated often, and expressing negativity through your words and thoughts, these are all signs that we must examine what we allow our eyes to see and store in our hearts. Much like a computer, suspicious programs that are susceptible to viruses and malware will destroy its function, but programs that clean, update, and maintain the device should ideally improve its function. Scripture is urging us to sanctify and cleanse our hearts by actively disciplining our eyes.

The enemy wants to fill our eyes with worldly things while God wants to fill eyes with heavenly things. Colossians 3 reminds us to set our hearts and minds on things above where Christ is, not on earthly things. We are to consume our sight with the promises, values, opportunities, and compassion of God. Yet, we often allow our eyes to be consumed with images and videos of sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil, greed, anger, malice, slander, and filthy practices. When we allow ourselves to view such things, we save them into our hard-drive and imprint them in our hearts. Our perspective then of the world are subject to what is in our hearts. The way we view ourselves, our purpose, our family, our friends, the opposite gender, political views, our values, morals, and esteem would all be influenced by what we allow our eyes to see. Therefore, if what is in our hearts is evil because what we expose ourselves to is evil, the way we view the world will be evil. For this reason, Jesus exclaims how dark would our whole bodies be if our eyes are unhealthy. However, if what is in our hearts is holy because what we expose ourselves to is holy, the way we will view the world will be holy for if the eyes are healthy our whole body will be full of light.

1. God, help me to realize my spiritual blindness and actively seek after that which represents you and leads to you.

2. Jesus, help me to see the world through your grace and purposes.

3. Holy Spirit, help me to discipline my eyes. To close them to darkness and open them to the light of Christ.

오늘 우리가 읽을 성경 말씀은 예수님을 만난 한 맹인의 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 다윗의 성을 걷고 계시던 예수님은 태어나면서부터 맹인이었던 한 사람을 보셨습니다. 그러자 제자들은 즉시 예수님께 물었습니다. "랍비여, 이 사람이 맹인으로 태어난 것이 누구의 죄 때문입니까? 이 사람의 죄입니까, 그의 부모의 죄입니까?" 마찬가지로, 우리가 고난이나 이해할 수 없는 고통과 슬픔을 마주할 때, 우리는 종종 그러한 일이 일어나는 이유를 간절히 찾으려 합니다. 우리는 율법과 정의의 옛 방식으로 되돌아가며, 이러한 질병이나 고통이 특정한 죄에 대한 하나님의 불쾌함과 형벌의 표시라고 생각합니다. 그러나 그리스도 이전에는 이것이 종교의 방식이었지만, 그리스도께서는 자신이 세상의 빛이심을 나타내셨으며, 죄에 대한 형벌로 여겨졌던 것이 이제는 그분의 은혜가 드러나는 기회가 되었습니다. 이 사람의 장애는 단순히 개인적이거나 육체적인 상태만이 아니라, 우리의 죄로 인해 집단적으로 그리고 영적으로 맹인이 되었음을 나타내며, 결국 우리는 세상의 빛이신 예수 그리스도를 필요로 한다는 사실을 보여줍니다. 그리스도 없이는 희망, 기쁨, 평화, 사랑, 용서를 볼 수 없으며, 대신 우리의 눈은 어둠으로 가득 차고 결국 우리의 몸도 어둠에 삼켜질 것입니다.

예수님은 어떻게 내게 시력을 주시는가?

우리 중 많은 사람들이 신체적인 맹인은 아닐지라도 영적인 맹인일 수 있습니다. 우리는 육체적으로 볼 수 있지만, 우리가 보는 것과 세상을 바라보는 방식이 영적 맹시나 예수 그리스도의 빛 없는 시각을 반영할 수도 있습니다. 따라서 예수님께서는 우리에게 그분의 눈과 빛을 따라 보라고 적극적으로 부르십니다. 이는 우리가 안경이나 렌즈를 바꿔야 한다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 대신, 우리는 그리스도를 통해 우리의 관점을 변화시켜야 합니다.

관점을 바꾸는 것은 종종 우리의 환경이나 상황을 바꾸는 것이 아니라, 그것을 바라보는 방식을 바꾸는 것입니다. 만약 당신이 불평을 자주 하거나, 짜증을 내거나, 자주 화를 내며 부정적인 말을 한다면, 이는 우리가 무엇을 보고 마음에 저장하는지를 점검해야 함을 의미합니다. 컴퓨터와 마찬가지로, 바이러스와 악성 코드에 취약한 프로그램이 기기의 기능을 망가뜨릴 수 있는 반면, 정화하고 업데이트하며 유지 관리하는 프로그램은 기기의 성능을 향상시키는거과 같이… 성경은 우리에게 우리의 마음을 거룩하게 하고 정결하게 하도록 촉구하며, 이는 우리의 눈을 훈련하는 것으로 시작됩니다.

사탄은 우리의 눈을 세상의 것들로 채우려 하지만, 하나님께서는 우리의 눈을 하늘의 것들로 채우기를 원하십니다. 골로새서 3장은 우리에게 그리스도께서 계신 위의 것을 생각하고, 땅의 것을 생각하지 말라고 권면합니다. 우리는 우리의 시각을 하나님의 약속, 가치, 기회, 그리고 긍휼로 채워야 합니다. 그러나 우리는 종종 음란, 부정, 욕망, 악, 탐욕, 분노, 악의, 비방, 그리고 더러운 행위로 가득 찬 영상과 현실을 보는 데 시간을 허비합니다. 우리가 이러한 것들을 보면, 우리는 그것들을 우리의 마음속에 저장하고 하드 드라이브에 새깁니다. 그러면 세상을 바라보는 우리의 관점도 결국 그것에 의해 좌우됩니다. 우리가 스스로를 어떻게 바라보는지, 우리의 목적, 가족, 친구, 이성과의 관계, 정치적 견해, 가치관, 도덕성, 자존감 등이 모두 우리가 보는 것들에 의해 영향을 받을 것입니다. 따라서 우리의 마음속에 있는 것이 악할 경우, 우리가 노출되는 것이 악하기 때문에 세상을 바라보는 방식도 악해질 것입니다. 이러한 이유로 예수님께서는 우리의 눈이 건강하지 않으면 우리의 온몸이 얼마나 어둡겠느냐고 탄식하셨습니다. 그러나 만약 우리가 거룩한 것들에 자신을 노출시킨다면, 우리의 마음속에도 거룩함이 자리 잡게 되고, 세상을 바라보는 방식도 거룩하게 될 것입니다. 왜냐하면 눈이 건강하면 온몸도 빛으로 가득 차기 때문입니다.

묵상:

1. 내가 시청하는 것 중에서 나 자신, 나의 관계, 그리고 세상을 바라보는 관점에 해로운 영향을 미치는 것은 무엇인가?

2. 나 자신, 나의 관계, 그리고 세상을 바라보는 관점을 치유하기 위해 내가 더 많이 봐야 하는 것은 무엇인가?

1. 하나님, 나의 영적 맹시를 깨닫고 주님을 나타내며 주님께로 인도하는 것들을 적극적으로 찾을 수 있도록 도와주세요.

2. 예수님, 세상을 주님의 은혜와 목적을 통해 볼 수 있도록 도와주세요.

3. 성령님, 나의 눈을 훈련하도록 도와주세요. 어둠을 향해 눈을 감고, 그리스도의 빛을 향해 눈을 뜨게 하소서.
