Matthew 6:33 - But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33 - But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Overview:

This story is paralleled in the gospel of Mark and Luke, providing a detailed account of this interaction. Jesus again entered Capernaum (which would serve as Jesus’ second home and ministry base) after some time and upon hearing of His return, a large crowd had gathered from every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. Some men had come carrying a paralyzed man on a mat, and when they saw that it would be impossible to get to Jesus through the large crowd, they dug an opening through the roof and lowered their friend before Jesus. In all accounts, the authors record that Jesus saw their faith. Not only was the paralyzed man on the mat desperate and hopeful for healing, but the friends were also as eager and willing.

However, instead of healing the man of his paralysis, Jesus first tells him, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven (Matthew 9:2).” Think for a moment what a great disappointment this would have been for the paralytic man and his friends. They went through all of that to see this man walk again, but instead of receiving healing, they had received forgiveness. Not only this, but this created an uproar amongst the people, especially the religious leaders who claimed blasphemy (act of offense, speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things) upon Jesus. Why? According to religious law, the only one who could forgive sin in all righteousness and absolute justice is God. For Jesus to claim that this man’s sins are forgiven would be to declare that He had that absolute right because He Himself is God.

Why did Jesus declare this man’s sin forgiven before healing him? The answer is found in Leviticus 24:16, which declares that whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall be put to death by stoning according to the command of God. If Jesus had spoken falsely against God with contempt, how could He have still healed the paralyzed man? The leaders of the law would take this question to Matthew 12 and accuse Jesus of driving out demons and performing miracles using demonic powers; however, Jesus replies that it would be illogical to argue that satan is responsible for thwarting the activity of his own demons because he would be divided against himself (Matthew 12:26). Jesus would further explain that every kind of slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven (Matthew 12:31). So by who’s power and authority does Jesus forgive sins and heal the sick? By His own authority as the Son of God and the Son of Man (Matthew 9:6).

The Greatest Miracle:

Jesus asks us today the same question He had proposed to the Pharisees:

“Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?” – Matthew 9:5

We know that Jesus is referring to the cost of saying one over the other. Healing the man of his physical illness would pale in comparison to the cost of forgiving his sins. Jesus would exercise power over the former but would have to die for the latter. As believers, we often forget in our prayers, hopes, and desires that the greatest miracle that we could ever ask for has already been given to us. Often, we seek after the gifts more than the giver, the signs and miracles, more than Jesus Christ Himself. We even press and test Jesus in providing for us the things we believe we so desperately need, but what we truly need more than anything is salvation. If Jesus were to heal this man without forgiving his sins, this man would simply walk himself into death rather than crawl into it. God permits physical sickness, hardships, and struggles not in spite, but as a deep reminder of our spiritual condition and our absolute need for His grace and forgiveness. Therefore, the blessings He provides in healing, signs, and miracles are a deep reminder of the true gift of the cross that saves our souls. The greatest miracles is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Reflection:

  1. Have we forgotten to thank and praise God for the greatest miracle of salvation that grants eternal life?

  2. Are you or anyone close to you in need of healing? Pray for true healing of the soul and body in Jesus Name: He has the authority to forgive, to save, and to heal.

Prayer:

  1. God, thank you for teaching me about how my priorities should reflect my destination in Heaven.

  2. Jesus, thank you for the gift of salvation and the sacrifice you made for my forgiveness.

  3. Holy Spirit, help me to live in the restorative and healing power of Jesus Christ each and every day of my life.
