Lent Day 4 [3.8.2025] / The Power of Prayer Pt. 1

Matthew 6:5-8 - And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Overview:

Continuing from our last lesson, how then are we to pray in secret? Jesus teaches us the model of prayer that we are to follow and apply to our own prayer lives. He begins with the words “Our Father…” which speaks radically into our relationship with God. Jesus teaches us to approach God as our Father in Heaven, which inherently establishes us as His children. We know that children stand in the inheritance of their parents, the protection of their parents, in the provision and care of their parents, and in an everlasting relationship with their parents. Though many of us may not have perfect parents or the ideal family unit, we must remember that God identifies Himself as our Father in Heaven who is overjoyed to give good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:9-11). In this way, when we pray, God does not tire, He is never too busy, or disappointed, and never unwilling to listen intimately to us. No matter where we go in life, no matter how old we are, and no matter what we do, we will always be children of our parents. The very fact that you were born proves that you have parents, and nothing can change who they are. This is the kind of love that God has for us: a kind of inseparable relationship that is blood-related by the finished work of the cross (Romans 8:38-39). We can always approach God with confidence that He loves us dearly and desires deeply to spend time with us.

Immediately following, Jesus uses the word “hallowed” which means “holy” to rightly worship and honor God above all others and especially ourselves. The purpose of prayer is not to change who God is to fit our lives, but to change our lives to align with God. To be holy means to be set apart, meaning that which is holy is like no other. When we describe God as holy, we are recognizing that there is no comparison, no match, no one equal to Him in power, glory, splendor, and honor. He is “set apart” from the rest. When we walk our journey of faith, we too are to strive to be “holy and pleasing in His sight (Romans 12:1-2)”, which means that we are to be set apart in our faith, hope, and living from the rest of a world that is broken and sinful. Honoring God in worship before listing our petitions and requests not only reminds us that He is more than powerful enough to provide but teaches our hearts to be deeply satisfied in His sovereignty and rule.

Jesus then teaches us to pray that the will of God would be complete here on earth and in this age as it is in heaven. Heaven is a place where God exercises complete dominion and power. It is a place of perfect peace and prosperity where there is no decay, destruction, or death. This prayer creates hope in our hearts that God’s perfect will would be manifested in and through this generation and our present age. Importantly, Jesus is teaching us that the key to peace in our lives and in our present situation like there is in heaven, is to submit to His kingship and trust that He not only has a plan but is powerful to accomplish it for our good (Romans 8:28). Peace does not come from all our needs and wants, requests and petitions being granted; peace comes from knowing that in the yes, no, and waiting, in the joys and sufferings, in the ups and downs, God who loves, cares, and knows all things is powerfully at work to bring all things to peace and prosperity according to His perfect will.

Why should we pray in worship and adoration before diving into our requests before God? One of the greatest powers in prayer is the power to change our perspective. Sometimes we find ourselves to be impulsive, regretful, impatient, and dissatisfied with where we are and have an idea of what we need to find a bit of relief. Sometimes we over-exaggerate our situations to even believe that if we don’t get that opportunity, or that job, or that girl or boy, or that grade, or into that school our lives would somehow be over. Yet, submitting to the sovereignty of God means to know that even if you were to fail completely in this life, Jesus still loves you and you are still saved; furthermore, if you were truly to die today because you were denied your request, would you not go to heaven still by the grace of Jesus Christ? And lastly, when we believe we think we know best for ourselves, we are humbled to remember we don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. God is in control, and we should not try to be. The only true request that would lead to death if it were to be denied would be salvation; but Christ has given this to us freely and abundantly by His death and resurrection. Time and time again, when we pray in the right order and with the right understanding and heart, the Holy Spirit changes our perspective to realize that the problems we thought were overwhelming are not so great, and the relationship issues we are having are not hopeless, and the emotions we are wrestling with are able to be let go. Just like everything else in life, anything worthwhile takes time and practice. Practice praying about the love of God, practice praying in worship to God, and practice praying for the will of God upon your life and He will cause you to see truly what is most important, what is most worthy, and to find peace even amid the storm.

1. Lord, please help me this lent season to build a powerful and personal prayer life with you.

2. My prayers have often been filled with my needs and requests over worship and adoration to you. God forgive me for being unaware of who and what my prayers should be about. Help me to follow your model of prayer over my life.

3. Holy Spirit, help me experience the power of prayer by transforming me and renewing my mind so that I may know God’s great plan and will over my life.

예수님은 하나님을 "하늘에 계신 아버지"로 부르라고 가르치십니다. 이는 곧 우리가 하나님의 자녀라는 것을 의미합니다. 우리는 부모의 유산과 보호, 공급과 돌봄, 그리고 영원한 관계 안에 있습니다. 우리의 가정이 완벽하지 않을 수도 있지만, 하나님께서는 "하늘 아버지"로서 자녀들에게 좋은 것을 주기를 기뻐하신다고 말씀하십니다(마태복음 7:9-11).

하나님은 우리가 기도할 때 피곤해하시거나, 바쁘시거나, 실망하시거나, 우리의 말을 듣기를 거절하지 않으십니다. 우리가 어디에 있든, 몇 살이든, 무엇을 하든 우리는 여전히 하나님의 자녀입니다. 우리가 태어났다는 사실이 부모의 존재를 증명하듯, 예수님의 십자가로 맺어진 하나님의 사랑은 결코 변하지 않습니다(로마서 8:38-39). 그러므로 우리는 언제든지 담대히 하나님께 나아갈 수 있으며, 하나님도 기쁨으로 우리와 교제하기 원하십니다.

거룩하신 하나님을 경배하는 기도

예수님은 이어서 "이름이 거룩히 여김을 받으시오며"라고 기도하라고 가르치십니다. 여기서 "거룩하다(hallowed)"는 것은 하나님을 가장 높고 존귀한 분으로 인정하고 경배하는 것을 의미합니다.

기도의 목적은 하나님을 우리 기준에 맞추는 것이 아니라, 우리의 삶을 하나님께 맞추는 것입니다. 거룩함은 "구별됨"을 뜻하며, 하나님은 다른 어떤 것과도 비교할 수 없는 분이십니다. 그분의 능력, 영광, 존귀함, 그리고 모든 존재에서 하나님은 유일무이하십니다.

우리는 신앙의 여정을 걸어가면서, "거룩하고 하나님께 기쁘게 받으실 삶"을 살아가야 합니다(로마서 12:1-2). 이는 우리가 세상과 구별된 삶을 살아야 한다는 뜻입니다. 세상은 죄로 가득 차 있지만, 우리는 믿음과 소망을 가지고 하나님의 뜻을 따르는 삶을 살아야 합니다.

기도할 때, 우리의 소원을 먼저 말하기 전에 하나님을 예배하고 찬양하는 것이 중요합니다. 이는 하나님께서 우리의 필요를 채울 능력이 있으심을 상기시키며, 우리의 마음이 하나님의 주권 안에서 만족을 얻게 됩니다.

하나님의 뜻이 이루어지기를 구하는 기도

예수님은 우리가 "뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것 같이 땅에서도 이루어지이다"라고 기도해야 한다고 말씀하십니다.

하늘은 하나님의 완전한 다스림과 평화가 있는 곳입니다. 그곳에는 타락도, 고통도, 죽음도 없습니다. 우리는 하나님께 이 땅에서도 그분의 완전한 뜻이 이루어지기를 구해야 합니다.

예수님은 여기서 평화의 비결을 가르쳐 주십니다. 그것은 바로 하나님의 왕 되심을 인정하고, 그분의 뜻이 우리의 삶 속에서 이루어지도록 신뢰하는 것입니다(로마서 8:28).

우리의 삶에서 평화는 모든 소원이 이루어질 때 오는 것이 아닙니다.평화는 “응답이 있든 없든, 기쁨 속에서도 고난 속에서도, 하나님이 선하신 계획을 이루고 계신다"는 믿음에서 나옵니다.

우리는 기도할 때 종종 자신이 원하는 것을 이루기 위해 하나님을 조종하려는 태도를 가질 때가 있습니다. 하지만 예수님이 가르쳐 주신 기도는 우리가 하나님의 주권을 인정하고, 우리의 시선을 하나님께 맞추는 기도입니다.

기도는 우리의 관점을 변화시킵니다

우리는 종종 즉각적인 해결책을 원하고, 원하는 것을 얻지 못하면 초조하고 불안해집니다.우리는 때때로 "이 기회가 아니면, 이 직장이 아니면, 이 사람이 아니면, 이 시험에서 좋은 점수를 받지 못하면 내 인생이 끝날 것 같다"고 생각합니다.

그러나 하나님의 주권을 신뢰한다는 것은 설령 우리의 계획이 무너진다 해도, 예수님의 사랑 안에서 우리는 여전히 안전하다는 것을 믿는 것입니다.

그리고 만약 우리가 지금 당장 죽는다 해도, 예수님의 은혜로 인해 우리는 영원한 생명을 얻었기 때문에 하늘나라에서 하나님과 함께할 것입니다. 결국, 우리의 가장 중요한 필요는 이미 예수님의 십자가를 통해 충족되었습니다. 마지막으로, 우리가 스스로를 가장 잘 안다고 생각할 때, 우리는 내일 무슨 일이 일어날지도 모른다는 사실을 기억하며 겸손해집니다. 하나님께서 주관하시는 분이시며, 우리가 그 자리를 대신하려 해서는 안 됩니다.

기도할 때, 성령님은 우리의 관점을 변화시키십니다.우리가 생각했던 문제들이 그렇게 큰 것이 아니었음을 깨닫게 되고, 관계 속의 갈등이 해결될 가능성이 있음을 보게 되고, 감정적으로 힘들었던 부분을 내려놓을 수 있는 힘을 얻게 됩니다.

기도는 마치 영적인 훈련과 같습니다.기도를 통해 하나님의 사랑을 묵상하고, 경배하며, 하나님의 뜻을 구하는 연습을 하다 보면, 우리는 점점 더 하나님께서 가장 중요하게 여기시는 것이 무엇인지 깨닫게 될 것입니다.

결론

우리는 기도를 통해 하나님과 깊은 관계를 맺을 수 있습니다.예수님께서 가르쳐 주신 기도는 단순히 외워서 반복하는 것이 아니라, 우리의 기도 생활을 인도하는 본보기입니다.

• 하나님의 뜻이 우리의 삶에 이루어지도록 기도하십시오.

기도는 하나님을 움직이는 것이 아니라, 우리를 변화시키는 과정입니다.우리가 하나님과 교제하는 시간을 소중히 여길 때, 우리의 삶은 점점 더 하나님의 뜻 안에서 평안을 누리게 될 것입니다.
