Lent Day 5 [3.10.2025] / The Power of Prayer Pt. 2

Scripture: Matthew 6:5-15 / 마태복음 6:5-15

Philippians 4:6-7 -  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 

Overview:

We then come to the three petitions we should bring daily to God regarding our lives. The first one is to ask God for our daily bread. We are reminded that in Exodus 16, God provided “manna” from heaven to provide food for the starving Israelites. This dough-like cake was similar to coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. God would provide manna every single morning and would command the Israelites to collect only what they needed for the day. Yet, some Israelites, who did not believe that God would provide faithfully, took more than they needed for the day, hoping to save enough for tomorrow or in the case of an emergency. However, the bible tells us that the extra they collected would be filled with mold and maggots the next morning. How in our world today do we deal with worry? When we worry, just enough is never enough. Our worry trains us to desire and want more than enough, so that nothing will ever actually be enough; and if nothing will ever actually be enough, we never stop worrying, and if we never stop worrying nothing will ever be enough, and so on and so forth. Praying beyond what we need for today spoils His plan for us in the future. It riddles our hearts of dough with the mold and maggots of worry and insecurity. Instead, Jesus teaches us the very prayer that overcomes our worry and that is to trust in God’s faithfulness. The bible teaches us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore (Hebrews 13:8). This means that we ought to know that if He provided manna yesterday, He will do it again today, and He will do it every day for all of eternity. We are constantly worried because our minds live in the future rather than the present, and we are constantly anxious because we are not attentive enough to be thankful for today. Jesus is teaching us to live in God’s faithfulness today and receive in thanksgiving the kinds of blessings He has for us with each new day.

The second petition is a petition of forgiveness. The translation is very intentional in using the word debt because this prayer does not simply refer to the wrongdoings we do every day, but the eternal debt of sin that we could not repay. No matter how much we worked, wealth we amassed, fame we achieved, nothing could pay the debt of our sin that would lead to death. But Jesus Christ came to earth as the perfect lamb of God to die on the cross and pay the price of our sins. Not only this, but He would resurrect from the grave and defeat death so that all who would believe in Him would be granted eternal life. If this is the case, why do I need to pray in repentance every day? Though we are saved by grace, we still fall and sin in our old ways. These sins make room for debt collectors to rule our lives in fear and manipulation, and for this reason daily repentance to ask God for forgiveness and the strength to overcome these sins is very important. More importantly, we are not only to ask God for the strength to turn away from our sins, but for the strength to forgive others who may have wronged us. Jesus clearly states that we are to forgive one another for we first have been forgiven. Actually, the translation tells us that we are to come to God and ask for forgiveness upon having forgiven those around us first. This is because when we choose to forgive those around us, we realize how difficult it is to let things go, how fearful it is to stop feeling hurt, and how courageous it is to love and embrace someone who has wronged us. Yet, it is only through the practice of forgiveness in our lives that makes room for God’s forgiveness to truly change us. Have you ever seen someone say that sin is okay because I will be forgiven for it anyway? That is someone who has not forgiven someone in their life and has never bore its cost. Forgiveness is a difficult and painful process that leads to healing and freedom. When you know the cost of forgiveness, we begin to understand deeper what forgiving us costed God.

Finally, the last petition is to ask God for deliverance. What is temptation? Temptation is any form or time that takes us away from God’s plan. It leads us in both the unholy and the unnecessary that leads our life off the path of righteousness and into the wilderness. Temptation leads to sin, which is to miss the mark. We often think sin is just the bad things that we do immorally and unlawfully, but sin is much broader. The most accurate description of sin can be described by a dart board with a bullseye. Any dart that does not hit the center is considered a sin. In our minds, not every dart is a bad throw, and some throws are better than others, but according to God’s holiness and will, any dart that does not hit the center is sin no matter how close it gets. Therefore, a dart that hits the outer circle is sin just like a dart that sits right next to the center (Romans 3:23-24). Temptation skews our aim, blinds us, and blurs our minds, causes us to fall into our desires for pleasure and vanity so that we would be off the mark; but Jesus tells us to pray against the schemes of the enemy and walk powerfully in His righteousness and glory. There is temptation all around us at every moment, so is this prayer telling me to hide away? No, this prayer is asking Jesus not to leave us to our own efforts and affairs in moments of struggle, but to ask for help in overcoming the evil one and finding victory over our temptations.

Reflection:

Correct prayer establishes our relationship with, our identity in, and our purpose upon God. When Jesus teaches us how to pray, He teaches us to pray knowing God first. That means we are to know, experience, and proclaim God as our Father in Heaven, us as children of the Most High, Him as worthy of all praise, and His love and perfect plan that never fails. Prayer should change our perspective, align our hearts with God, and call our thoughts and emotions into submission before the Almighty God. Our prayers should build our faith rather than test God, and our prayers should exercise the power of the Holy Spirit over our hearts. While prayer truly changes everything, prayer most powerfully changes us by inviting God into our lives. What Jesus teaches us in our scripture today is the model for prayer. We are not to recite this word for word but are supposed to personalize this outline according to our relationship with God. Too many times we pray without spending time with God and opening our hearts to listen to Him. Instead of placing all our attention on what we need from Him, we are to spend time opening the door for Him to enter our hearts. It is through prayer that God convicts us and changes our minds so that we would know and trust in His perfect will for us (Romans 12:2).

Prayer:

1. Lord, help me to turn my focus to your daily provisions in my life and receive everyday with thanksgiving. Help me to trust in your faithfulness and surrender my worries and concerns to you.

2. Jesus, help me to remember the depth of your love for me in my relationships. There are people I need to forgive in my life just as you have forgiven me. When I am scared to love the people that have hurt me, help me to remember the scars in your hands and feet that were pierced for my transgressions.

3. Holy Spirit, help me to overcome temptation. I know that sin wants to destroy my life, but I am often too week to overcome its pleasures and vanity. Please give me the strength to stand firm in your holiness and trust in you.

   
   

세 가지를 구합니다

우리는 우리의 삶과 관련하여 하나님께 매일 드려야 할 세 가지의 기도 대해 배우게 됩니다.

첫 번째는 하나님께 우리의 일용할 양식을 구하는 것입니다. 출애굽기 16장에서 하나님께서 굶주린 이스라엘 백성을 위해 하늘에서 “만나”를 내려주신 사건을 기억합니다. 이 만나라는 것은 고수 씨처럼 생긴 반죽 같은 떡으로, 꿀 섞인 과자 같은 맛이 났습니다. 하나님은 매일 아침 만나를 내려주셨고, 백성들에게 그날에 필요한 만큼만 거두라고 명령하셨습니다. 하지만 하나님의 신실하심을 믿지 못한 일부 이스라엘 백성들은 내일을 대비하거나 비상 상황에 대비하기 위해 필요 이상으로 만나를 거두었습니다. 그러나 성경은 이렇게 거둬들인 만나가 다음 날 아침이면 벌레가 생기고 썩어버렸다고 기록합니다.

오늘날 우리는 걱정을 어떻게 다루고 있을까요? 걱정을 하면 ‘충분한 것’이 결코 충분하지 않게 됩니다. 걱정은 우리가 항상 ‘더 많은 것’을 원하게 만들며, 그 결과 우리는 아무리 가져도 만족할 수 없습니다. 우리가 걱정을 멈추지 않는다면, 결국 아무것도 우리를 만족시킬 수 없는 상태가 됩니다. 그러므로 우리가 오늘 필요 이상의 것을 기도할 때, 그것은 하나님의 계획을 망치는 것이며, 우리의 마음을 걱정과 불안이라는 곰팡이와 벌레로 가득 채우는 것입니다.

그러나 예수님은 우리에게 걱정을 극복하는 기도를 가르쳐 주십니다. 그것은 바로 하나님의 신실하심을 신뢰하는 것입니다. 성경은 예수 그리스도는 어제도, 오늘도, 영원토록 동일하시다(히브리서 13:8)고 말합니다. 즉, 어제 만나를 주신 하나님께서 오늘도 주실 것이며, 영원히 공급하실 것이라는 사실을 믿으라는 것입니다. 우리는 미래에 대한 걱정 속에서 살기에 끊임없이 불안하지만, 예수님은 우리에게 오늘 하나님께서 주시는 복을 감사함으로 받으며, 현재에 충실하라고 가르치십니다.

두 번째는 용서 입니다.

이 기도의 번역에서 ‘빚(debt)’이라는 단어를 사용한 것은 매우 의도적입니다. 이 기도는 단순히 우리가 날마다 짓는 잘못을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 스스로 갚을 수 없는 ‘죄의 빚’을 의미합니다. 아무리 열심히 일하고, 재산을 모으고, 명성을 얻어도 우리는 죄의 빚을 갚을 수 없으며, 그 결과는 영원한 죽음입니다. 하지만 예수 그리스도께서 완전한 하나님의 어린양으로 오셔서 십자가에서 우리의 죄 값을 치르셨습니다. 그리고 죽음을 이기고 부활하심으로써 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람에게 영생을 허락하셨습니다.

그렇다면 우리는 왜 매일 회개의 기도를 해야 할까요? 우리는 은혜로 구원받았지만, 여전히 우리의 옛 모습대로 죄를 지을 때가 있습니다. 그리고 이 죄는 우리 삶에 두려움과 조종을 가져오는 ‘빚 독촉자들’이 들어올 틈을 제공합니다. 그래서 우리는 매일 하나님께 용서를 구하며, 죄를 이길 힘을 허락하시기를 기도해야 합니다.

더 나아가, 우리는 단순히 우리 죄를 용서해달라고 기도하는 것에서 멈추는 것이 아니라, 다른 사람을 용서할 수 있는 힘을 달라고 기도해야 합니다. 예수님은 우리가 먼저 다른 사람을 용서한 후에야 하나님께 용서를 구하라고 분명히 말씀하십니다. 왜냐하면 다른 사람을 용서하는 과정에서 우리는 용서가 얼마나 어려운 일인지 깨닫게 되기 때문입니다.

용서는 쉽지 않습니다. 때로는 상처를 잊는 것이 두렵고, 아픔을 내려놓는 것이 불안하며, 나를 해친 사람을 사랑하는 것이 너무나도 어렵습니다. 하지만 용서는 결국 우리를 자유롭게 하고 치유하는 과정입니다. 우리는 용서의 대가를 치를 때, 하나님께서 우리를 용서하시기 위해 치르신 대가를 더욱 깊이 이해할 수 있습니다.

마지막은 구원입니다.

‘시험’(temptation)이란 무엇일까요? 시험이란 우리를 하나님의 계획에서 벗어나게 하는 모든 순간과 요소를 의미합니다.

유혹은 우리를 불경건한 일과 불필요한 일들로 이끌며, 의의 길에서 벗어나 광야로 인도합니다. 유혹은 결국 죄로 이어지며, 하나님이 정하신 목표에서 벗어나는 것입니다. 우리는 죄를 단순히 도덕적으로 잘못된 행동으로만 생각하기 쉽지만, 죄는 훨씬 더 넓은 개념입니다.

이를 가장 정확하게 설명하는 비유가 바로 다트판과 과녁의 개념입니다. 하나님이 정하신 기준에서 벗어난 모든 화살이 죄입니다. 우리는 어떤 화살은 과녁 근처까지 갔으니 괜찮다고 생각할지 모르지만, 하나님의 완전한 거룩함 앞에서는 과녁을 벗어난 모든 것이 죄입니다(로마서 3:23-24).

유혹은 우리의 목표를 흐리게 만들고, 우리의 시야를 가리고, 판단을 흐리게 합니다. 그리하여 우리는 쾌락과 허영을 좇아 목표에서 벗어나게 됩니다.

그렇다면 예수님께서 가르쳐 주신 기도는 우리가 세상을 피해 숨어 살라는 뜻일까요? 아닙니다. 이 기도는 우리가 시험을 이겨낼 수 있도록 예수님께 도와달라고 구하는 것입니다. 우리는 매 순간 유혹에 둘러싸여 있지만, 하나님께 도움을 구할 때 승리할 수 있습니다.

묵상:

올바른 기도는 하나님과의 관계, 우리의 정체성, 그리고 우리의 목적을 세웁니다.

예수님은 우리가 하나님을 먼저 알고, 경험하며, 그분을 우리의 하늘에 계신 아버지로 인정하는 것을 기도에서 가장 중요하게 여기셨습니다. 또한, 우리의 기도는 우리의 관점을 변화시키고, 우리의 마음을 하나님께 맞추며, 우리의 생각과 감정을 하나님께 순종하도록 해야 합니다.

기도는 하나님의 권능을 우리의 삶 속에서 경험하는 시간입니다. 기도를 통해 성령님께서 우리의 마음을 변화시키고, 우리가 하나님의 선하신 뜻을 신뢰할 수 있도록 도와주십니다(로마서 12:2).

예수님께서 가르쳐주신 기도는 단순히 암기하고 반복하라는 것이 아닙니다. 이것은 하나님과의 관계 속에서 각자의 기도로 적용할 수 있는 틀입니다.

우리는 기도할 때 하나님과 시간을 보내고, 우리의 마음을 열어 그분의 음성을 듣는 것이 중요합니다. 하나님과 더 깊이 교제하는 시간을 통해 우리의 삶이 변화될 것입니다.

기도:

1. 주님, 제 삶 속에서 날마다 베풀어 주시는 공급하심에 초점을 맞추고, 매일을 감사함으로 받아들이게 도와주세요. 주님의 신실하심을 신뢰하며 저의 걱정과 염려를 온전히 맡길 수 있도록 도와주세요.

2. 예수님, 제 관계 속에서 주님께서 저를 얼마나 깊이 사랑하시는지를 기억하게 해주세요. 저 또한 주님께 용서받은 것처럼 용서해야 할 사람들이 있습니다. 저를 아프게 한 사람들을 사랑하는 것이 두려울 때, 저의 허물을 위해 못 박히신 주님의 손과 발의 상처를 기억하게 해주세요.

3. 성령님, 유혹을 이길 수 있도록 도와주세요. 죄는 제 삶을 무너뜨리려 하지만, 저는 종종 너무 연약하여 그 유혹과 헛된 것들을 이겨내지 못합니다. 주님의 거룩함 안에서 굳게 설 수 있는 힘을 주시고, 오직 주님만을 신뢰할 수 있도록 인도해주세요.
