Lent Day 7 [3.12.2025] / The Freedom of Almsgiving Pt. 2

Scripture: Matthew 5:38-42 / 마태복음 5:38-42

2 Corinthians 9:7 - Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

How should I give?

Jesus teaches us to give in three ways:

1. Turn the other cheek

2. Offer our coat

3. Walk the second mile
   

Jesus teaches us first to offer up our bodies for His purposes by turning the other cheek. We are not to be provoked into becoming like those who have hurt us, but to endure and respond to those who would test us with love, honor, and humility. In this way, offering our bodies to God as holy and pleasing sacrifices is our first type of giving (Romans 12:1-2). Our words and our actions, what we allow ourselves to hear and watch, how we think and feel – do they all glorify God and His purposes in us? Turning the other cheek is far more courageous and powerful than retaliation because it creates in us a radical strength and honor that is beyond this world. The way we live should bring great curiosity in who we believe amongst those around us. We are to align the actions and state of our bodies with the holiness of God in all circumstances.

Secondly, Jesus teaches us to be radically generous with our possessions. Our finances and possessions should be a comfort to others in need rather than a source of greed. Money is one of the great evils that Jesus warns us against (Matthew 6:24). Without proper stewardship, money will control us in its lacking and in its abundance; but learning how to set aside a portion of your finances for God reminds us necessarily that God is present in our needs and makes room for His purposes to powerfully take root in our lives, thoughts, work, and homes, in our spending, our saving, and in our investing. Many of us may say, I will give when I make enough money, but there is a reason why God asks us to give proportionally rather than a lump sum of money. Giving should be consistent throughout seasons of abundance and seasons of scarcity because the amount matters so little compared to the practice. The reality is, giving when we have much does not speak nearly as powerfully as giving when we don’t have enough. If we cannot give obediently when we have little, we will never give joyfully when we have much. Good stewardship is to find and practice the greater purpose of God’s provision in your life. So how should I give? We ought to use our finances to bless someone around us who may be in need, invest in the purpose of our Church, and provide abundantly for our household. Being faithful in our finances before God prevents idolatry and greed and allows us to invest in eternal riches and returns rather than in that which spoils and fades away (Matthew 6:19-21). Tim Keller (Leader of Redeemer Presbyterian in New York City, who passed away in 2023, and one of my spiritual heroes), gives insight on how giving reveals the condition of our heart before God:

“Here is how you know if you get the gospel. When you look at Jesus and see that he gave everything for you, and then you hear that God is asking you for 10%, you will think, ‘Gosh, that’s not much.’ I mean after all if Jesus only tithed His blood, you would still be lost. 10% is a way for many of us just to get started. 10% is not the standard. The cross is the standard. This isn’t about legalism, it’s just a response to overwhelming grace.”

The standard of our generosity towards others this lent season is the standard Jesus set in picking up the cross for us.

Thirdly, we are to offer up our time. There are those who need us to walk the extra mile with them in this season of life. For some of us, we may need to be obedient to God with our time first before learning how to invest that time in His purpose for us. Our schedules may be ruled by busyness that we rarely even have a moment to sit down and wonder about our relationship with God and others. Even more so, some of us may even take pride in how busy we are or even feel like we are wasting our time if our days are not filled with things to do, one after the other. For others, we may have much time but the quality of where it is spent may need to change. Without a doubt, God is commanding us to deepen our relationship with Him and our relationship with others, but many times through worry and anxiety we allow our busyness or our distractions to rule over our time. Regardless of where your time is being spent, Jesus teaches us to offer our time and attention to the people He has sent us to walk with in this season of life. Whether you are spending your time being overwhelming busy or sitting in your chair playing games, we always feel like we never have enough time. This reality is not because we do not have enough time, it is because we are never deeply satisfied with what we do with our time; however, when we offer God our time, He establishes it in eternity and uses it for such great purposes that will bring us deep joy and satisfaction that our time has been well spent. God is calling us to be generous with our time and walk with others, listen to others, love on others, and spend time with others around us this lent season.

Almsgiving must be met with obedience. Believe it or not, God desires to partner with you in His great plan to save souls and lives, but often we lack in our giving and our generosity. The reason why many of us lack in knowing deeply how much God loves us and His great plan for us, is because we often only give to those we pity and spend time with those who are good. In our actions, we reinforce the false pretense that God only gives to those who are fit in their spirit and character. Yet, scripture tells us that God causes the sun to rise on the good and bad, and the rain to fall on the righteous and unrighteous. Our almsgiving should reflect the love of God, not our prejudice. With our body, finances, and time we are called this lent season not only to help those who are easy to help, but to help those who are difficult to love and pray for those who have hurt us in the past. We hope that our practice of almsgiving would change the world, but also reinforce the great love that God has for you.

Prayer:

1. God, thank you for teaching me about how I should be generous this lent season and your desire to partner with me in and work through me to do great things.

2. Jesus, help me to experience your great love that gave up everything for me and realize that you are calling me to take the first step in following your standard of giving this lent season.

3. Holy Spirit, give me the strength and faith to be disciplined and generous with my giving to steward all the resources that God has given me for the sake of others.
   

어떻게 나누어야 할까요?

예수님께서는 우리에게 세 가지 방법으로 나누는 법을 가르쳐 주십니다:

1. 다른 뺨을 돌려 대십시오.

2. 겉옷을 내어 주십시오.

3. 두 번째 마일을 함께 걸어 주십시오.

   
   

예수님께서는 먼저 우리의 몸을 하나님의 목적을 위해 드리도록 가르치십니다. 우리는 상처를 준 사람들과 같은 방식으로 반응하지 않고, 인내하며 사랑과 존경, 겸손으로 그들을 대해야 합니다. 이렇게 함으로써 우리의 몸을 거룩하고 하나님께 기쁘게 드릴 산 제사로 드리는 것이 첫 번째 나눔의 형태입니다 (로마서 12:1-2). 우리의 말과 행동, 듣고 보는 것, 생각과 감정이 모두 하나님을 영화롭게 하는지 점검해야 합니다. 다른 뺨을 돌리는 것은 보복하는 것보다 훨씬 더 용기 있고 강력한 행위입니다. 왜냐하면, 이는 세상의 가치관을 뛰어넘는 강한 힘과 명예를 우리 안에 형성하기 때문입니다. 우리가 살아가는 방식은 주변 사람들에게 우리가 믿는 분이 누구인지 깊은 호기심을 불러일으켜야 합니다. 우리는 우리의 몸과 행동을 모든 상황 속에서 하나님의 거룩함과 일치시키는 삶을 살아야 합니다.

둘째로, 예수님께서는 우리에게 재물을 아낌없이 나누라고 가르치십니다. 우리의 재정과 소유는 탐욕의 원천이 아니라, 어려움에 처한 이들에게 위로가 되어야 합니다. 돈은 예수님께서 우리에게 경고하신 큰 유혹 중 하나입니다 (마태복음 6:24). 올바른 청지기가 되지 않으면, 돈은 부족할 때나 풍족할 때나 우리를 지배하게 됩니다. 그러나 하나님께 일정한 부분을 드리는 것은 우리가 하나님이 우리의 필요를 채워 주시는 분임을 기억하게 하고, 하나님의 목적이 우리 삶 속에서 강력하게 자리 잡을 수 있도록 길을 열어 줍니다. 많은 사람들이 “돈을 더 많이 벌면 기부하겠다”라고 말하지만, 하나님께서 일정 금액이 아니라 비율로 드리라고 하신 데에는 이유가 있습니다. 나눔은 풍요로운 시기뿐만 아니라 부족한 시기에도 꾸준히 이루어져야 합니다. 왜냐하면, 액수 자체보다는 그 실천이 훨씬 더 중요하기 때문입니다. 우리가 부족할 때 나누는 것이 풍족할 때 나누는 것보다 더 큰 믿음을 보여줍니다. 적을 때 기쁨으로 드리지 못한다면, 많을 때도 결코 기쁨으로 드릴 수 없습니다. 올바른 청지기의 삶이란 하나님의 공급하심에 대한 더 큰 목적을 찾고 실천하는 것입니다. 그렇다면, 우리는 어떻게 나누어야 할까요? 우리의 재정을 사용하여 어려운 이웃을 돕고, 교회의 사역을 지원하며, 가정을 풍성하게 돌보아야 합니다. 하나님 앞에서 재정에 충실한 것은 우상숭배와 탐욕을 막고, 썩어 없어질 것이 아니라 영원한 것에 투자할 수 있도록 합니다 (마태복음 6:19-21).

뉴욕 리디머 장로교회의 지도자였으며, 2023년에 소천하신 저의 영적 영웅 중 한 분인 팀 켈러 목사님은, 우리의 나눔이 하나님 앞에서 우리의 마음 상태를 어떻게 드러내는지에 대해 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다:

“당신이 복음을 진정으로 이해했는지 확인하는 방법이 있습니다. 예수님께서 당신을 위해 모든 것을 주신 것을 볼 때, 그리고 하나님께서 당신에게 10%를 요구하시는 것을 들을 때, ‘와, 10%만?’라고 생각할 것입니다. 결국 예수님께서 당신을 위해 단지 10%의 피만 흘리셨다면, 당신은 여전히 구원받지 못했을 것입니다. 10%는 많은 사람들에게 시작하는 방법일 뿐입니다. 10%가 기준이 아닙니다. 십자가가 기준입니다. 이것은 율법주의에 관한 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 단순히 은혜에 대한 반응일 뿐입니다.”

우리의 나눔의 기준은 예수님께서 우리를 위해 십자가를 지신 그 기준이어야 합니다.

셋째로, 우리는 시간을 나누어야 합니다. 이 시기에 우리와 함께 추가로 한 걸음을 걸어야 할 사람들이 있습니다. 어떤 사람들에게는, 하나님의 목적 안에서 시간을 투자하기에 앞서 먼저 시간을 하나님께 드리는 순종이 필요할 수도 있습니다. 우리는 너무 바쁘게 살아가면서도 정작 하나님과 우리의 관계에 대해 고민할 시간을 거의 갖지 못합니다. 심지어 어떤 사람들은 바쁜 삶을 자랑스러워하고, 계속 무언가를 하지 않으면 시간을 낭비하는 것처럼 느낄 수도 있습니다. 반면에, 많은 시간을 가지고 있지만, 그 시간을 어떻게 사용하는지가 문제일 수도 있습니다. 걱정과 불안으로 인해 우리의 삶이 바쁨과 산만함에 의해 지배되도록 두는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 예수님께서는 우리가 이 시기에 우리와 함께 걸을 사람들에게 시간과 주의를 기울이라고 가르치십니다. 바쁘든, 한가하든, 우리는 항상 시간이 부족하다고 느낍니다. 이는 시간이 부족해서가 아니라, 우리가 시간을 의미 있게 사용하지 못하기 때문입니다. 하지만 하나님께 시간을 드리면, 하나님께서 그 시간을 영원한 가치로 채워 주시고, 깊은 기쁨과 만족을 얻게 하십니다. 이번 사순절 동안 우리는 하나님께서 보내주신 이들과 함께 시간을 보내며, 그들을 듣고, 사랑하고, 나눌 수 있도록 부르심을 받았습니다.

자선은 순종과 함께 이루어져야 합니다. 하나님은 당신과 함께 일하며 영혼과 생명을 구원하는 위대한 계획을 이루고자 하십니다. 그러나 우리는 종종 나눔과 너그러움에 있어 부족함을 보입니다. 많은 사람들이 하나님의 사랑과 계획을 깊이 깨닫지 못하는 이유 중 하나는, 우리가 단지 불쌍한 사람들에게만 나누고, 좋은 사람들과만 시간을 보내기 때문입니다. 하지만 성경은 하나님께서 선한 자와 악한 자 모두에게 해를 비추시고, 의로운 자와 불의한 자 모두에게 비를 내리신다고 말씀하십니다. 우리의 자선은 하나님의 사랑을 반영해야 하며, 우리의 편견을 반영해서는 안 됩니다. 우리의 몸과 재정, 시간으로 우리는 이번 사순절에 단순히 사랑하기 쉬운 사람들만 돕는 것이 아니라, 사랑하기 어려운 사람들을 돕고, 과거에 우리를 상처 입힌 사람들을 위해 기도해야 합니다. 우리는 우리의 나눔이 세상을 변화시키기를 바라지만, 그보다 먼저 하나님의 위대한 사랑이 우리를 변화시키기를 원합니다.

기도:

1. 하나님, 이 사순절 동안 저에게 관대함의 의미를 가르쳐 주시고, 저와 함께 일하시기를 원하시는 당신의 뜻을 알게 해주셔서 감사합니다.

2. 예수님, 저를 위해 모든 것을 내어주신 당신의 크신 사랑을 경험하게 하시고, 이번 사순절 동안 나눔의 기준으로 십자가를 바라보며 첫걸음을 내딛을 수 있도록 도와주세요.

3. 성령님, 저에게 힘과 믿음을 주셔서 하나님께서 주신 모든 자원을 올바르게 관리하고, 이웃을 위해 너그럽게 나눌 수 있도록 인도해 주세요.
